Choosing treatment Options: Hospitalization and Outpatient

Some of us are required to go through certain, if not all treatments available for recovery. Others don’t need as extensive of a recovery program, and are looking for something more to get them kicked into gear. These options include the Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) and the Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP). The Partial Hospitalization Program is an intimate treatment program that allows for a more introspective experience. The Intensive Outpatient Program is much more schedule-based and meant for those who need a rigid structure to go by. In order to help you choose which program would be best, here is a description of their benefits for comparison.

Partial Hospitalization Program

As mentioned before, this program offers a more private experience that focuses on one’s development into living drug-free. It is customized to your current state of addiction, and hears your concerns for what you may need physically, mentally and emotionally. This flexible program increases social skills and healthy living through a small group of peers and one-on-one counseling from a singular therapist. This allows for your addiction to be better understood by your counselor since they will have more time to devote to you. Ultimately this program is best for anyone who has finished a detox and is looking for some relaxed stability to bring him or her back into society.

Intensive Outpatient Program

The Intensive Outpatient Program is a horse of a different color. This program is meant to come after the PHP program, if they need further assistance. This program is primarily focused on group therapy, with minimal one-on-one sessions. Similar to the PHP, IOP takes into account the patient’s specific needs and how their body functions. It also teaches patients how to acclimate back to their jobs and life outside of the facility, all while giving them the skills to overcome their addiction. Although this does feature a defined schedule, there are multiple forms of the IOP schedule. These include both day and night groups, which offer more flexible time management to fit the person’s life.
