What is Mental Health Treatment Like in South Florida?

Living with an untreated mental health condition can be difficult. No matter which condition you suffer from, the symptoms of a psychiatric disorder can greatly impact your ability to function in your daily life.

According to John Hopkins Medicine, “An estimated 26% of Americans ages 18 and older — about 1 in 4 adults — suffers from a diagnosable mental disorder in a given year.”[1]

There are many different types of programs to choose from when it comes to mental health treatment. At Florida Recovery Group, we offer mental health treatment in South Florida with an individualized approach to ensure that you and every patient who walks through our doors are provided with the support they need. We have two different types of programs for you to choose from- IOP and PHP.

Which Mental Health Disorders Are Treated?

Mental health issues are wide-ranging, with many different types of conditions out there. At Florida Recovery Group, we specialize in treating complex psychiatric disorders and co-occurring conditions. This means that if you struggle with a mental health condition and a substance use disorder, we can help you recover from the effects of both ailments.

According to research provided by SAMHSA, “approximately 9.2 million adults in the United States have a co-occurring disorder.”[2]

The mental health disorders we treat include:

  • Mood Disorders – depression, bipolar disorder, and complicated grief.
  • Anxiety Disorders – anxiety disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), phobias, and panic disorder.
  • Trauma – post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), grief and loss, dissociative disorders, and childhood trauma.
  • Personality Disorders – Borderline personality disorder, dependent personality, and narcissistic personality disorder.
  • Psychotic Disorders – schizoaffective disorder.

These conditions are treated in a variety of ways. While some people may need medications, these are only used for treatment-resistant symptoms or to manage symptoms during therapy on a short-term basis. The majority of our work is done through behavioral therapy and group counseling sessions, providing you with an approach that addresses the causes and effects of your mental health issues.

Comprehensive and Individualized Treatment Planning

When you arrive at our facility in South Florida, you will be assessed and evaluated by a team of professionals. During the assessment, you will undergo a psychiatric and medical evaluation by one of our nurses or physicians and a mental health counselor will collect information about your history in detail. This will help our staff members create a detailed treatment plan that is specific to your unique needs.

At Florida Recovery Group, we use a broad spectrum of therapies to address your mental health needs. This allows clinicians to create thoughtful and comprehensive treatment plans that will provide you with the best foundation of recovery possible.

Each plan will offer:

  • A thorough psychiatric evaluation to identify the root causes of your mental health condition.
  • A minimum of one 60-minute individual psychotherapy session per week.
  • Three to five hours of therapy groups daily depending on your needs.
  • Off-site group events like nature walks and other outdoor activities.
  • A weekly clinical and medical team meeting reviews your treatment plan and adjusts accordingly.
  • Family and couples therapy.
  • Telehealth sessions.
  • Medication management.
  • Therapies may include Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Relational Therapy, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), and Rapid Resolution Therapy (RRT).
  • Yoga, Art, and Meditation.
  • Chiropractic, Occupational, and Vocational Counseling.

Types of Programs Offered

We offer two different types of programs for mental health treatment at our Delray Beach facility. This ensures that you will have the choice to attend the type of program that you think suits your needs. If you are unsure about which program to choose, we can evaluate you and make an informed choice on which is the best course of action.

Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)

Mental health partial hospitalization programs are often used as a step-down level of care after you have completed a residential stay. However, if you meet the necessary clinical and medical criteria this program could be utilized as a direct admission.

Florida Recovery Group’s PHP program offers 5 hours of services a day for 6 days a week. This allows you to participate in unsupervised activities at night and on the weekends.

Various types of activities offered include:

  • Nature walks
  • The gym
  • Movies
  • Equine therapy
  • Beach
  • Outdoor meetings

During your stay, you can either choose to live in your own home or use Florida Recovery Group’s housing. In this program, you will learn how to maintain healthy relationships, develop proper coping mechanisms, and complete daily activities such as bathing, cooking, grooming, cleaning, and more.

Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)

Intensive outpatient programs for mental health are often used as a step-down option for people who have completed PHP. However, some people may choose to use this as a standalone treatment option if they suffer from milder symptoms of mental illness. Unlike other IOP programs, we offer housing with supervised staff, which allows you to live alongside other clients who are going through the same program as you.

IOP provides you with a minimum of 10 hours of services per week, 3-hour groups three to five days a week, along with one individual session including other additional services.

Some of the secondary services offered in our IOP program include:

  • Vocational therapy
  • RRT
  • EMDR
  • CBT
  • Art therapy
  • Meditation
  • Yoga
  • Exercise
  • Biofeedback
  • Occupational therapy
  • Chiropractic services

This program provides patients with the same benefits as PHP, however, it is done so on a less strict level. This would be more suited for an individual with a mild mental health condition and no co-occurring disorders. However, you could use this program in combination with a PHP to create a stronger foundation for recovery.
